It's Harvest Season.

When the air gets cool. When the leaves change. When the corn is brown. It's harvest time.
The fall harvest, here at McCracken Acres, is probably one of the busiest times of the year. For some days, harvest is fun, but others, I just wish it would hurry up and be over. Harvesting corn and soybeans, and planting wheat is done all at the same time. This all lasts at least up to a month, if not a little longer. It is the longest month ever! Almost every night, dinner is eaten without Daddy. Instead, he is emptying trucks, planting wheat, and everything else that's needed to be done. As harvest goes on, each person in the house misses Daddy more and more. When there is a rainy day, Daddy can come home in time, because he isn't harvesting. But by the end of the season, we are all more than ready to have our Daddy back, and boy is it a wonderful day when that last field is combined....when that last grain is put into the bin, when Dad walks into the house on time for dinner....What a rejoicing that will be.
Harvest season is not all miserable though...Not for me anyways. It is so much fun to help Daddy measure the moisture, to ride back in forth in the semis and to ride in the combine with Grandpa till it's dark. It is so much fun to watch all the technical stuff in there, and figure out what everything is for...I personally watch all that so I may be able to drive the combine someday. Note: If you bring food along, it would be even more fun!
So, in conclusion, harvest can be a lot of fun, but also it can be very difficult at times. It helps to have a good attitude towards it. It is a time when we need to help each other out, be kind, and don't pull each other down. If we have that kind of attitude, harvest season will be much much easier on this family.

  1. You captured this season and what it is to us perfectly in words! I think we all get tired and then cranky without our Super-Glue (daddy). I will definitely concentrate on making things nicer around here as much as possible. Love you, Cassia!
